ELEVEN thousand households in North Somerset are currently listed as unemployed, according to latest figures.
The Office For National Statistics shows one in every six of the district’s 67,000 households - 16.2 per cent - has no earned income.
This is slightly below the regional average rate of 16.6 per cent, and well below the UK mean of 18.8 per cent.
Trade union GMB says it’s time for politicians to reverse a trend which has seen 54,000 public sector jobs lost since the 2010 General Election.
South West GMB secretary Richard Ascough said: “If someone does not have work it hurts. It hurts the person, it hurts their families, it hurts their communities and it hurts our economy.
“There is a massive shortage of jobs as these figures show. A first step is to stop the public sector job cuts in the pipeline. Policies that increase employment are the only sure fire route to recovery.”
