A Weston-super-Mare church has started a year of fundraising for the homeless with a bang after raising more than £1,500 in one evening.
People at the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, in Baytree Road, have decided to run a year of fundraising events for Somewhere To Go, a charity based in the town’s Boulevard which supports rough sleepers and sofa surfers.
Church-goers will be holding parties, bazaars, auctions and multicultural events to raise the cash.
Mel Sarich, from the church, hopes the money will go towards setting up a night shelter for the town’s homeless.
She added: “It was the Mercury article about the plight of the homeless in Weston which has been inspirational and as a result of the publicity we decided to do this appeal.
“It is a worthwhile cause which deserves the money, we are aiming to raise £5,000 but hope to surpass this.”
They set off their year-long appeal with a buffet dance at Weston Football Club, in Winterstoke Road, on Saturday.
Around 150 people attended the ‘hugely successful’ night which featured live music and food.
Ms Sarich said: “The food was a sumptuous feast of curries, salads, trifles and cakes prepared and donated by many individuals, many of whom are from the Filipino community.
“The DJ was great and had everybody rocking.
“We have yet to be given a final figure for this event but it is believed it will be approximately £1,800.
“We are now working on our next event which will be an auction on June 16.”
The auction will be held at the church’s parish hall and will see people walk home with limited edition paintings, a hand crafted dolls house and a man’s Raleigh bike.
Other fundraisers include:
– A multi-cultural gathering at the church on July 15 celebrating different ethnic backgrounds.
– A quiz night on October 13 will see people put their knowledge to the test at the church.
– A bingo night and raffle will be held on November 10.
– A Christmas bazaar will finish off the first part of the year on November 24 with a variety of stalls offering up bric-a-brac, tombola and more.
