A NEW charity is using out-of-hours clubs as a way of keeping kids fit, healthy and out of trouble in Weston’s South Ward.

XTND – Improving Futures, is just one of a group of organisations working with youngsters which could win a grant of up to £1,000 as part of a Mercury-supported campaign.

Go! Kids Go! is being run by the Mercury and the Weston Lions Club – and clubs have less than a month to get their applications in to win one of the awards.

XTND is currently being run from Bournville Primary School and says its work ‘enhances the development and education of children, young people and their families’, while promoting social inclusion within communities in South Ward.

To do this, it is providing recreation activities such as the clubs at Bournville and Windwhistle primary schools, and appropriate play facilities, training and support.

And in order to do so on a wider scale it is hoping to win one of the £1,000 grants donated by three prominent local sponsors.

The charity’s development manager Lynn Winter said: “Our children rarely leave the estate and without the clubs provided by XTND they would take part in little or no activity outside school. We aim to make our sports clubs inclusive by encouraging children with natural sporting ability to take part in a range of sports.

“In addition we support those children who would not naturally take part in sports by offering less traditional activities including dance, baton twirling and wake up shake up sessions at breakfast clubs.”

The three £1,000 grants, as well as smaller ones from the Lions’ fund and the Weston Carnival Committee’s donation, will be given out at the Lions Real Ale Festival on July 29.
