Discussion on Streetlife focused on litter in Weston this week, after it was suggested North Somerset Council should use covered bins to manage waste during the wet and windy winter weather.

Starting the thread, Adrian E observed that Weston’s litter problem had worsened in recent months.

He said: “Sadly I observe that a major cause of litter on our roads is rubbish blown out of recycled bins.

“Weston is very windy and I have seen whole boxes turned over and all the rubbish blown down the street, including wine bottles, which is very dangerous for tyres.

“I note that other authorities use covered bins for recycled rubbish, shouldn’t North Somerset consider this?”

His suggestion appeared to glean support from people living in Weston, who agreed ‘most of Weston would look lovely’ if it could solve its rubbish problem.

Many believed that if the people of Weston took more individual care to pick up litter and look after the streets, the town centre would benefit.

Jules L encouraged people to take the matter into their own hands.

She said: “I don’t understand people.

“We pick up litter around where we live every week, if people were caring about their environment they would pick up litter around their houses after dustmen have been. Simple.

“Come on people, take pride in our lovely town and take rubbish home with you, it’s not just the council’s responsibility but yours too.”

Caroline L added: “I regularly pick up litter, if everyone just picked up one piece a day and popped it into a nearby waste or dustbin most of Weston would look lovely.”

Skyfall suggested the ‘overflowing’ litter in the town masked a wider problem with the state of the environment around the world.

They commented: “Sadly, I feel that all this recycling is rather pointless and far too late for the environment.

“One only has to walk around the streets to see that people just don’t care enough about the environment. Some of my neighbours don’t even put out food waste.”

Adrian E concluded that people’s attitudes need to change, as well as the system for disposing rubbish and recycling.

He commented: “I hope Somerset Council reads this and takes note.

“I am sure it’s good if we all pick up others rubbish but it would be good if less was there to start with.”
