A PAEDOPHILE who was originally given a community rehabilitation order by a judge has been jailed.Jehovah's Witness Michael Porter, originally from Portishead and now living at Mill Hill, London, had previously pleaded guilty to 21 charges of indecent assault and three charges of gross indecency at a court appearance earlier this year. Most of the offences were carried out over a 15-year period and involved victims from the Clevedon area.He was only brought to book after he was reported to the elders of the Jehovah's Witness church in Portishead. He then made a full confession to his own church group in London. In August the married 39-year-old was sentenced to a three year community rehabilitation order.Following an appeal the case was discussed before the Court of Appeal in London. He was sentenced in his absence to 12 months in custody for each of the three charges of gross indecency and 18 months on each of the other counts and jailed for a total of 18 months.Detective Inspector Erica Last said she was pleased the sentence had been reconsidered and that a custodial sentence was justified.DI Last said: "The original sentence did not properly reflect the harm caused to the victims of these offences."The public need to know they will be protected and the people who offend against the vulnerable and young need to know that they will go to prison.
