A parish council has expressed its concerns for the Mendip Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) following a resort’s planning application.

The Cheddar Woods Resort and Spa applied to Sedgemoor District Council for full planning permission to build 24 new holiday lodges.

The resort, in Axbridge Road, is a five-star rated holiday destination made up of approximately 160 lodges.

The plans, which include changes to the landscape and surrounding habitat and new roads, were branded as ‘flawed’ by Cheddar Parish Council.

The council’s planning committee said building in an AONB should only be in ‘exceptional circumstances’ and in the public interest which it said are not met in this case.
