THE much-discussed future of a Highbridge park is no closer to being decided after a ‘crazy’ last-minute proposal this week.

Sedgemoor District Council’s executive committee met to discuss whether to lease Apex Park’s BMX track to Bourne Leisure, which runs a neighbouring holiday site, and had planned to install 16 caravans on the track as part of a 50-year tenure.

The plans were first discussed behind-closed-doors back in April, but following intervention from Burnham and Highbridge town councillors, the talks were brought into the public arena and a consultation launched in August.

At its most recent meeting, the executive instead proposed giving control of the park over to the town council itself.

A Sedgemoor District Council spokesman said executive members had suggested handing over the park to the town council as it was an asset ‘within their area’, and would expect a response by the end of January.

But Highbridge councillor Phil Harvey blasted the idea as ‘ludicrous’.

He said: “I think the executive were split on what they should do and someone came up with the idea of giving it to us, we knew nothing about it. The officers must be scratching their heads because there is a lot of work to do to even work out what it would cost.

“Sedgemoor wants an answer from us in January, but we don’t even have a meeting before then, let alone the staff, equipment and money to run the park. It’s a crazy idea.

“I can’t see it being a goer because it is ludicrous to expect us to take it over, our objective to achieve best value would be put in real jeopardy; Sedgemoor organise their contracts en-masse so they can get more value than we could.”
