POTENTIAL parking changes in Winscombe could help encourage trade to the village's shops.

Proposals to introduce areas for a half hour of free parking in Woodborough Road and spaces for an hour in Apple Tree Drive were unanimously approved by the parish council on Monday night.

Archie Forbes, chairman of Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council, said the proposals would help businesses in the centre of the village as passing trade was often scared off by police officers enforcing yellow lines.

They will now be looked at by North Somerset Council’s highways department ahead of final approval.

Councillor Forbes said: “People often park on these roads to pop into the shops to get something, but when they come out there is a policeman waiting for them as there are single yellow lines.

“I think this will help the businesses in the centre of the village as it will encourage more people to pop in and see what they have to offer.”
