THE installation of pay-and-display parking meters on 27 Weston town centre streets is set to start, with the system set to be running before Christmas.

The scheme will see motorists paying up to £1.20 an hour to park in bays in the town, with £31 residents’ permits providing only two hours’ parking per day.

Howard Pothecary, chairman of Weston Town Centre PACT, said at a meeting on Wednesday that the scheme will be running by mid-November.

PC Mark Flavell said Avon and Somerset Constabulary will be working to combat those using double yellows to avoid paying parking charges when the scheme comes into effect.

He said: “We will aim to combat the problem of illegally parked vehicles for about a month when the new system comes in.”
