MORE than £250,000 could soon be spent on creating on a new youth centre in a North Somerset village.North Somerset Council wants to spend the cash on a completely new building for youngsters in Congresbury and tear down four temporary buildings in Kent Road which are currently home to the village's youth club.Council officers want to create a much bigger building which could be used as a base for other community groups and societies. The proposal has been approved by the council's executive committee but must be rubber-stamped at a full meeting of councillors.Cash for the scheme would come from the £21million the council received by selling off its council houses to a housing association earlier this year.It is hoped youth club membership would rise by 30 per cent with the new building. Currently most members come from the Southlands Estate and the council says it is 'inevitable' young people from the proposed Worle Park housing development would need a youth club and somewhere to go.In a report to councillors it says: "One of the priorities is to increase the level of youth support to rural and isolated communities."It is our intention to develop a project with Congresbury Youth Partnership and the rest of the parish that results in the appointment of a youth worker that will increase and improve the range of reach of youth work."There are no other local community buildings available that would provide the type of space and engender a sense of ownership by young people in Congresbury.
