NOT many people celebrate their 90th birthday by risking life and limb in a daredevil stunt - but that is how Peter Payne plans to commemorate the landmark.
Peter has plotted an unusual way to mark turning 90 as he will leap from a plane in a tandem parachute jump.
He thought it was a way of making his big day unforgettable to him, while helping others, as he raises money for Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
The occasion will be all the more poignant following the recent death of close friend and fellow CRUK supporter, Derek Chapman.
Peter, a retired BT engineer, said: “This is something that I have wanted to do all my life, ever since static line training off a tower in 1944.
“As a past deputy chair of the local Cancer Research fundraising committee and as a very good friend of the recently dearly departed Derek and Yvonne Chapman, who founded the committee, I want to raise at least £1,000.”
Peter’s charity bid has not gone unnoticed by CRUK with area volunteer Dawn Harrison leading the praise.
She said: “We are absolutely delighted that Peter has decided to attempt such a great challenge at his young age to raise money for CRUK.
“Peter has been busy gaining sponsorship and is hoping to reach his goal of £1,000 in support of CRUK.
“He has being doing lots of preparation and we’re sure he is going to have an amazing experience. We can’t thank him enough for his support and want to wish Peter all the very best on the day.”
