A PETITION to stop the Severn Barrage has been set up on the Downing Street website. The petition was set up by a Tim Chappell, who issued the following statement on the site: "The River Severn is a truly unique wildlife habitat of worldwide significance. Building a Severn Barrage will destroy much of this. What is the point of creating 'green' energy if the price we pay is environmental vandalism and destruction of important ecosystems?"In a previous edition of the Weston & Somerset Mercury, the renewed possibility of a barrage was backed by local hoteliers and water sports groups. The barrage would stretch from Lavernock Point in Wales to Brean Down. Proposals include 200 hydro-electric turbines, two wave farms, two lock gates, shipping channels, four marinas and a lifeboat station. A Government White Paper, put before Parliament on May 23, saw ministers back a whole host of renewable energy plans, including a Severn Barrage. Mr Chappell's petition can be viewed on http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/savethesevern/
