A PETITION signed by over a hundred residents asking for the derelict Tropicana to be run by a charitable trust has been given to Weston Town Council.The petition, organised by Weston resident Richard Whittington, of Atlantic Road, was handed over at a full town council meeting in the Town Hall today.Mr Whittington said the signatures took just 100 minutes to collect in Weston's High Street, at a rate of about one signature a minute.The seafront site is set to be transformed into a swimming pool, hotel and attractions in a £25million project by developer Henry Boot.At the meeting Mr Whittington said: "I request that the council should consider setting up a steering party to join with interested residents to consider leasing the Tropicana for the benefit of the people of this town."You are no doubt aware of the depth of feeling that is evident within the town and district regarding the Tropicana."Mr Whittington has already organised a series of public meetings about the proposal to gauge public opinion.North Somerset Council have already signed a development agreement with Henry Boot and plans are expected to be submitted for approval in the autumn.
