Photo competition winners revealed

AFTER weeks of entries and thousands of votes, the winners of the Weston At Its Finest calendar competition have been announced.
The competition called for Mercury readers to submit their best photos of Weston-super-Mare in all its glory, in the hope they might feature in a calendar in aid of the Birnbeck Regeneration Trust.
Judges whittled down a selection of more than 300 entries to a limited number of photos for each month of the year. Mercury readers then voted online in their thousands to select a winning photo for each month.
Some of the winning photographers included Jacqueline Caven, whose pictures of fireworks at the Winter Gardens and a snowy portrait of Weston’s rooftops were huge hits for November and December.
Other popular choices included Martin Powis’ image of the Uphill boat yard and Sarah Wood’s picture of Birnbeck Pier at sunset, which were the winning entries for March and August respectively.
After the competition closed on October 27, it was decided the photo which finished in second place for each month would also feature as a small image on the relevant calendar page.
The competition, which was backed by the Mercury, was set up to raise money for the Birnbeck Regeneration Trust – a campaign group which is fighting to save the crumbling pier from falling into the sea. The trust wants to build a Victorian-style attraction on the pier.
The calendar will be on sale later this month and a full list of stockists will be revealed in the coming weeks.
