ILLUMINATIONS similar to Blackpool were suggested for Weston's seafront, this week back in 1964.

The story was reported in the August 21 edition of the Weston Mercury & Somerset Herald.

* The idea to set up lights in Weston similar to those in Blackpool was first posed by the town’s hotels association. The paper reported how it was willing to give two 110-foot pieces with 15,000 lightbulbs to the Borough Council as long as the council was willing to be responsible for its maintenance. The council created a new sub-committee to discuss the idea in more detail.

* A year after receiving the news
Brent Knoll train station would be closed, the porter was able to announce this would no longer be the case. Around eight trains a day stopped at the station in 1964. But the good news did not extend to Bleadon and Uphill Station which was still due to close.

* Wedmore won the award for the best-kept village in Somerset for the second year running.

* Thousands of fish died in water below Bleadon Bridge because of pollution.

* The paper also reported how a generous bequest to the Weston Abbeyfield Society, which created homes for the elderly, was made as part of a fortune of money left by Ethel Sergeant. The Society was expected to be given £10,000. Money was also given to the RNLI, the Fire Service Benevolent Fund and the Weston Training Centre Children’s Fund.

* And the Brenner family, who owned the Grand Pier, was considering getting back into the business of making coin-in-the-slot amusement machines. Negotiations were underway with Weston Borough Council for a site to build a factory on.
