The story was reported in the September 17 edition of the Weston Mercury and Somerset Herald.

■ A teenager from Axbridge, who already had a Royal Humane Society award, dived into some docks in Bridgwater to rescue a father and son whose van had fallen into the water. Thomas Adams, aged 19, was fishing when he saw it reverse into the docks. He helped the son swim to the surface and pulled the father out of the car and resuscitated him before the ambulance arrived. Thomas had received the Royal Humane Society in 1963 after he went out across ice-covered Cheddar reservoir in aid of four brothers who had fallen in. Sadly only two of them survived.

■ A youth centre due to be built in Worle was taken off a building programme schedule because of a Government ‘squeeze’ on local authority spending.

■ A Weston woman celebrated her 101st birthday with champagne and cake. Marion Warden, who was a watercolour artist was described as witty and nimble-minded.

■ Weston was due to get its first zebra crossing. Weston Borough Council had been asking the Government for a crossing for a number of years, and it was due to be installed in Knightstone Road.
