A MOBILE phone mast earmarked for Yatton High Street has been refused the go ahead after objections from concerned residents.Phone giant T-Mobile submitted an application for a 12m mast to be erected in the Market Industrial Estate, opposite the Market Inn on the High Street. But following letters of objection about the position and appearance of the mast from residents, North Somerset Council has turned it down.North Somerset Councillor for Yatton, Tony Moulin, said: "I was approached by many residents who were very concerned about the mast, and I shared those concerns."Although these masts do not require planning permission because they are less than 15m in height, they can be refused on the basis of their location and appearance."I lobbied the planning department and pointed out that the lack of any backdrop to absorb the impact of the mast made the site inappropriate. I also argued that the ground on which it was placed slopes downhill, so from some positions the mast would appear much larger."The planners took the same view and common sense has prevailed in what is a very sensible decision."Following its refusal to grant permission for the mast in the High Street, North Somerset Council has suggested the mobile phone company 'investigate the area around Arnolds Way near the roundabout entrance, Park Farm, Smart Systems, Stowell's Concrete and the highway verge.'
