NAILSEA'S dilapidated Glassworks site could be turned into a mixed development of homes and shops.North Somerset Council announced this week that it had declared the High Street site surplus to requirements and is now planning to put together a development brief in conjunction with joint owner Jeremy Hobbs and developer Edward Ware Homes. The move to develop the site for housing and offices comes after the authority failed to secure grant funding to use the land for community uses such as a park. Initial plans for the site show a mixed use scheme with retail units at ground floor level and homes above.Further houses would also be built on the Brockway side of the site. The site has also been listed by English Heritage as a scheduled ancient monument and any development will have to meet with strict criteria to protect the Glassworks' remains. A report about the development was due to be discussed by the authority's executive yesterday (Tues).
