FOOD waste bins can be lined with plastic bags for the first time.

A North Somerset Council spokesman said a trial into their use had been successful.

Previously, only compostable bags and newspapers could be used, but the council wants the food waste collection service to be easier and cheaper to use.

North Somerset residents generate 14,500 tonnes of food waste every year, but only half of this is currently being recycled.

By recycling, the council says £1.2million bill to treat and dispose of waste could be invested into other services.
