Theatre-goers were evacuated from The Playhouse theatre in Weston-super-Mare last night (Thursday) after the sprinkler system went off and flooded the building.

Firefighters were called to the venue, in High Street, just before 7pm to reports of flooding.

They found the first floor, ground floor and basement had all been flooded, along with the backstage area. It was caused by the theatre’s internal fire-fighting system, which had gone off during the show.

The audience, who had been there to watch the North Somerset Dance Festival for primary and secondary schools, performers and staff had already been evacuated.

Fire crews, from Avon Fire and Rescue Service, cleared the flood water and worked with theatre staff to salvage items from flooded areas.

Firefighters remained on the scene until just before 9pm, when it was left in the hands of theatre staff.

* Some shows at The Playhouse have been cancelled as a result of the flooding.
