SWIMMERS need to demonstrate their support for Backwell Pool, or they could find themselves high and dry, with nowhere nearby to take the plunge, a district councillor is warning.Last year, a planning application to build a swimming pool at Scotch Horn in Nailsea was granted outline planning permission. In addition, a working party is due to be formed this month with a view to progressing the project.Backwell Leisure Centre's future will be re-evaluated in three years' time, and could be closed two years later.Cllr Peter Burden and Felicity Baker, his fellow district councillor, have been arguing the case that Backwell's pool should remain open, even if Nailsea gets its own swimming pool. But Cllr Burden says people who want Backwell's pool to remain open need to start speaking out and making their case or they could end up with nowhere nearby to have a splashing time.Cllr Burden said: "It seems to me we're being conned into grandiose schemes which might happen in 10 years' time, but we've got to provide the support for facilities which are already there."The only people who seem to be arguing the case for Backwell Pool to remain open seem to be me and Cllr Felicity Baker."We could do with more people showing their support for the pool. They can do it by using the pool, contacting us, starting a campaign or making their thoughts known to the parish council."Nobody has objected to the case we're making, but it would lend weight to our argument if other people started banging the drum too."The dread I've got is that we'll end up not maintaining Backwell's pool and it'll have to close, and there still won't be one in Nailsea.
