A NEW police station will open at Bristol International Airport on Monday. The station will be a base for a team of officers patrolling the airport and will also serve residents living in villages surrounding the Lulsgate site.More police officers will be deployed at the airport as well as a team of Special Branch officers, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and a dog unit.An Airport Watch scheme will also be launched next week. As part of the scheme, airport visitors and nearby residents are being encouraged to be the eyes and ears of the airport and report crimes or suspicious incidents to the new station.Plane spotters are also being asked to keep an eye out for trouble.Inspector Chris Ware, head of the police operation at the airport, said: "The aim of Airport Watch is to involve those visiting the airport to be our eyes and ears and report anything that they believe might be suspicious."We also hope to involve members of the public who live near to the airport and 'spotters' who take up vantage points around the airfield. We hope both groups will be able to work with us."The station has been opened to prepare for the airport's planned expansion. Airport bosses believe the number of passengers could double to around nine million by 2015.Villagers living near the airport are also being encouraged to report incidents to the station or visit it for help and advice. The station will be staffed by PCSOs who will join the other police officers on patrols of the airport. It is based in the old terminal building and will be open Monday to Friday from 9am-12noon.
