THE number of police community support officers (PCSOs) patrolling the Weston area is set to double in the coming months.An extra 30 to 40 PCSOs are due to be deployed across North Somerset in the next six to eight months. The Weston sector's complement of 10 PCSOs will more than double.The new officers will be distributed among various beat teams including those in Milton, Worle, Ashcombe, South Ward and the surrounding villages.The new PCSOs will be given responsibility for individual wards or parts of wards within the beat areas to get closer to the communities they serve.Sgt Dave Holtby said: "The new officers are part of a Home Office driven neighbourhood policing initiative aimed at getting closer to our communities and working with them on a more local level. "It's happening to all police forces across the country."There will be no reduction in the number of normal officers we have. "We aren't replacing one type of officer with another. We are getting additional funding for the PCSOs from the Government."What the PCSOs will do will depend on the issues in the beat. In one area they might deal with more traffic problems, or it could be schools related.
