A THIEF smashed a till at a sweet shop in Burnham last Friday before making off with £140 in cash.
Police are appealing for witnesses after a man entered the Sweet Shack shop in Burnham High Street at about 4.50pm, and began paying for some items by credit card before beginning to hit the till, eventually smashing it open.
The man got away with the cash despite the efforts of the on-duty shop assistant to stop him. A 20-year-old man from the area has been arrested in connection with the raid.
Store owner Kirstie Isom said the staff member had been left shaken by the incident, but Sweet Shack opened as normal on Saturday morning and new security measures are to be installed.
She said: “I have had the shop for two years and we have never had anything like this before. There is no CCTV in the shop but we are getting some installed as a result of this, and a panic button.
“I don’t want to leave someone on their own in the shop any more so we are going to have to put extra staff on the rota as well. We are going to have to fork out and we are only a little sweet shop.”
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “We were called to reports of a theft on Friday at around 5pm. A man entered the shop and grabbed cash from the till before fleeing.
“We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time who may have any information.”
