AVON and Somerset Police is holding a special memorial event to honour officers and staff who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The event mirrors a national memorial day, which alternates between the capital cities of London, Cardiff, Dublin and Edinburgh and builds on events held last year in North Somerset.Twelve months ago a memorial event was staged at police headquarters and a memorial parade organised in North Somerset policing district.Because of the interest shown last year, it was decided this year to build on those events and hold another forcewide service at Portishead HQ on September 30.Inspector Mark Evans, who is co-ordinating the event, said that the actual plans for the day were still being put in place but he confirmed that there will be a piper and mace escort.Officers and staff will present readings.Chief Constable Colin Port will be joined by other senior officers and representatives from the six policing districts and the service will be led by force chaplain the Rev Andy Padgett. The event will include the dedication of a new updated plaque honouring all those who have worked for the constabulary, recognising their commitment and contribution to the communities of Avon and Somerset.
