POLICE are looking to trace a woman whose handbag was stolen in Weston yesterday afternoon (Sunday).

At around 5pm in Severn Road, a thief made off with the unknown woman’s handbag, but was soon caught up by a member of the public who had witnessed the crime, and returned the bag to its owner, but did not get her name.

The 40-year-old suspect was then detained at around 5.10pm on Station Road by a member of the British Transport Police, and has since been released on bail.

PC Kate Hockey said tracking down the bag’s owner would help to progress charges against the suspect.

She said: “She is described as possibly being in her 60s with a black handbag. I would ask her to get in touch through our website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting reference 66105/15.

“I would also like to thank the public-spirited member of the public who gave chase and whose call to the police enabled this arrest to be made.”
