A MAN was arrested after police swooped on the suspected van thief in Highbridge on Sunday.

Barry Veysey, aged 53, was cornered by seven police cars in his van at the junction of Market Street and Church Street, and smashed into one police vehicle whilst trying to escape.

He was wanted by police after allegedly stealing the white Citroen van from near Taunton, and officers set up a road block in the town centre to stop him driving away.

Veysey, of Kings Way, Mark, was arrested and has been charged with driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving aggravated vehicle taking and driving with no insurance.

Inspector Roger Tolley said: “When our camera team let us know the vehicle was in the town, we set up a road block to stop him. Luckily no one was injured when he drove into one of our vehicles.”

Having appeared at Sedgemoor Magistrate’s Court on Monday, and has been remanded in custody before an appearance at Taunton Deane Magistrate’s Court via videolink on May 18.
