DEMAND for courses to teach English have rocketed at Weston College after an influx of Polish workers into the town. The college had 'very few' Polish students just two years ago but now has about 300 who want to improve their language skills. There has been a massive growth in the number of Polish workers in the town since their country joined the EU in 2004. The Government agreed to admit workers from the new accession countries, which also included places like Hungary and Latvia.Weston's library now has a section devoted to books in Polish.Jacqui Ford, head of the college department which runs the English courses, said: "It's predominantly been Polish students who we have seen a lot more of but there have also been Lithuanians. "We've had to lay on extra courses at times to fit around their work. "Many of them have low paid jobs, perhaps working in residential homes, or do seasonal work along the seafront."We could get more Romanians and Bulgarians when they join the EU next year. The courses are free to EU people.
