FRUSTRATED councillors are planning to turn themselves into traffic wardens in a bid to put an end to parking problems in their town.Tickets will soon be placed on cars parked illegally in Axbridge. They will have all the hallmarks of the traditional parking ticket but with one important difference - there will be no fine.Town councillors cannot legally enforce their own parking restrictions but hope the 'polite' tickets will play on the consciences of the offending drivers and make them see the error of their ways.Inconsiderate parking has infuriated traders and residents for years and the issue has always been a hot topic in the town. But the police do not have enough officers to patrol the problem streets to hand out fines. It is hoped the gentle reminders will move motorists on so buses can drive through the streets and tourists have somewhere to park.To keep the administration system simple, the tickets will not carry the name of the town council. Councillors will hand them out as ordinary members of the public.Police community support officer Julie Lewis is in favour of the scheme and it will be launched as soon as the council has decided exactly what will be printed on the tickets.Speaking at a council meeting in the Town Hall this week, Councillor Jeremy Gall said: "It is only an advisory note, it is not as if we will be policing The Square."Councillors were unsure whether to let members of the town's chamber of commerce join in the scheme and give out tickets as well. Councillor Jennifer Trotman said: "I would expect the problem may be that each business owner would do it for their area rather than as a blanket response to the whole square.
