People across Somerset will be encouraged to get out in their garden this weekend.

Somerset Garden Day aims to help people realise the benefits of spending time in their gardens with their friends and loved ones.

People across Somerset are invited to enjoy the sunshine for the first of what is expected to become an annual event on Sunday.

Ahead of the event, organisers surveyed 177 Weston people about how they use their gardens, and found 50 per cent of respondents said they feel happiest in their outdoor space.

This compares favourably to 10 per cent who are happiest watching TV and 11 per cent who chose eating out.

Annie Maw, lord-lieutenant for Somerset, said: “Somerset Garden Day offers a rare chance for us to come together with neighbours, friends and family to celebrate our gardens – one of life’s greatest pleasures.

“Our gardens help us to feel happy, rejuvenated and inspired and Somerset Garden Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the pleasures which gardens bring.”
