CONCERNED residents are calling for tests to be carried out on the water at Portishead Lake Grounds after a number of dead fish were discovered.Several fish have been discovered dead over the past few days and residents are concerned the water may have become polluted. The lake - a popular visitor attraction with thousands of people across the district - is used for a number of activities including sailing training.Residents say if the water is polluted, young people using the lake may also be at risk.Resident Reyna Knight said: "I have seen three large fish dead and floating on the water myself."The sailing club is using the lake to coach young people and I am concerned there may be health risks to these youngsters if there is something wrong with the water in the lake."There are too many fish in the lake and not enough vegetation for them."No one seems to care about the lake which is a shame as it is a wonderful facility for the town."I think the council should carry out some tests to make sure there is nothing harmful in the water."North Somerset Council spokesman Zoe Briffitt said problems with low oxygen levels in the lake were linked to the recent spell of hot weather.Mrs Briffitt said: "We are asking our contractors to check the lake and remove any dead fish."This problem seems to affect the weaker fish."There is not a problem with the water quality at the lake as the water is replenished by fresh spring water from a natural spring above the lake."However, as a precaution we are going to carry out checks on the water quality.
