VILLAGERS who let their pets poo on the greens in Congresbury could face massive fines.

VILLAGERS who let their pets poo on the greens in Congresbury could face massive fines.

The parish council is planning on implementing dog control orders around children's play equipment on both George V and Broadstone Playing Fields and off Riverside Gardens.

Dog owners will have to keep their pooches on leads and pick up their mess otherwise penalties will be imposed under the Neighbourhoods Act.

The initial on-the-spot fine will be £75, lowered to £50 if paid within 10 days.

But offenders who do not put their hands in their pockets and end up in court could end up paying hundreds.

A public consultation is currently being carried out in association with North Somerset Council before the orders can be implemented.

Parish council clerk, Jo Duffy, said: "We need villagers to stop letting their dogs run freely and foul around the play areas.

"If the control orders are put, in signage will be put up warning people they should not allow it."

If the plans get the go ahead specially-trained dog wardens and other North Somerset Council officers will be able to impose the fines.
