POPULAR sporting events will still go ahead in Burnham, despite the proposed closure of the swimming pool.

Sedgemoor District Council has announced the Burnham Aquathon on April 13 and the Burnham Triathlon on June 1 will still take place this year.

Campaigners against the closure have been given until May 31 to find someone to purchase the leisure facility on Berrow Road.

If a buyer is not found, Sedgemoor District Council will close the pool and residents will have to travel to Cheddar or Bridgwater to swim.

The closure was announced last year when the authority found it had a £1.8million funding gap to plug.

Petitions from members of the public and King Alfred School were handed to the district council by members of Save Our Swimming pool (SOS) at a special meeting held at The Princess in Burnham in January.

Ann Bown, the portfolio holder for leisure, culture and sport, and group manager of leisure and marketing, Teresa Harvey, will be holding public meetings for residents to hear about the latest progress with the pool and any news about negotiations with potential buyers.

The first of these meetings will be held tonight (Thurs) from 6-7pm in Burnham Community Centre in Berrow Road.
