GREEN-FINGERED volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year to make Weston look its best have been praised by Weston Town Council.

At the council's amenities committee meeting on Monday, Councillor Charles Heard personally thanked Flower Power chairman Richard Knowles for all his team's hard work.

Flower Power is an initiative set up by the town council, and supported by the Weston & Somerset Mercury, to create floral feats around the resort with the aim of entering Britain in Bloom.

This year's creations included several plant-filled boats on roundabouts in Worle and the floral train and clock in Alexander Parade.

Future projects include hanging baskets outside the Odeon in The Centre and the large green area off Bideford Road.

The team is currently awaiting the results of this year's South West in Bloom competition which are due in September, after judging took place earlier this summer.

Members will be taking a trip down to St Ives for the awards ceremony.

Mr Knowles said at the meeting: "I have been told if we carry on as we are we could be looking at a gold ward in the future."

Councillor Andrew Horler suggested the growing team needs to be more organised for next year's regional flower competition and might need more funding in the future.
