Proposed changes to transport subsidies consulted on

PUBLISHED: 19:00 11 June 2013

FREE school transport for vulnerable children and low income families will be protected under proposed changes to a £13million service which provides subsidised travel.

The changes, currently being consulted on by Somerset County Council, involve transport assistance for pupils moving home during the final 18 months of secondary education and more support for those with temporary medical conditions.

A phased withdrawal of subsidies for families with children attending faith schools from September 2014 onwards is among the proposals.

About 13,500 schoolchildren and college students receive help with transport costs, and the majority of pupils who already get help will not be adversely affected.

Frances Nicholson, cabinet member for children and families, said: “We need to bring our policies up to date to make sure that we offer the best help we can to those families who need it most. I look forward to hearing what people say about the proposed changes to our discretionary policies.”

Full details of the changes and details of how to respond before the July 10 deadline can be found at
