FOUR campaigners from the Weston and Somerset area were arrested as they spearheaded an emotional protest against the Government's use of nuclear weapons.Congresbury GP Richard Lawson was joined by David Parkin from Axbridge and Wendy Cox and Jeff Brewster, both from Shipham, in lying down in a road outside the Faslane Royal Navy base in Scotland. They were campaigning under the slogan 'Tractors Not Trident', and believe money being spent on developing nuclear weapons at sites such as Faslane could be better spent elsewhere. The base is home to the controversial Trident nuclear submarines. The quartet, all members of the Somerset Peace Group, was arrested by police during the protest and detained for 10 hours. As they lay in the road, preventing workers from getting to their early morning shift, they sang a version of the famous Somerset band the Wurzel's 'Drink Up Thy Cider', replacing it with the words 'Pack Up Thee Trident'.Dr Lawson, aged 60, said: "There would be no problem if there was a 100 per cent cast iron guarantee that Trident will not be fired in anger."The fact of the matter is that the Government is ready and willing to order it to be fired at any time, causing millions of deaths to civilian non-combatants, men, women and children.
