A VILLAGE pub wants permission to play live music until 1.30am and serve alcohol until 1am.The Swan Inn in Wedmore has applied to Sedgemoor District Council for an extra hour to sell alcohol on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Its owners also want permission for live acts to play an hour and a half longer than they can currently play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and an extra half an hour during the week.Pub owner Punch Taverns is spending over £100,000 refurbishing the run down building. The work is due to finish in early April when new landlord and lady Keith and Lorraine Williams move in. The couple, who currently run the Wheatsheaf Inn in Stone Allerton, are planning a welcome evening for punters to have a look round the refurbished pub.Wedmore Parish Council is not keen to see the pub's opening hours extended. It objected to the application at its monthly meeting last week.Councillor Muriel Welch said: "I don't see why the Swan's hours should be any different from the George or New Inn. The Swan is central in the village and surrounded by homes and people are entitled to live in peace and quiet. "When there's a function there with loud music, I have to switch on my TV or radio because of the thumping music."Cllr Edwin Badman said: "Pubs should all have the same licensing hours."The council has written to Sedgemoor saying pub opening hours should be the same for all pubs in Wedmore. Residents have until April 7 to object.
