WHAT started off as a St George's Day joke has turned into a living nightmare for a village landlady. Angie Sayer has received threats to burn down her pub from angry Welsh people.Angie, who runs the New Inn in Wedmore, made national news when she was questioned for inciting racism after police officers received a prank letter of complaint.Locals in fancy dress costumes took turns to fire their homemade bows and arrows over the pub's skittle alley at a Welsh flag target. The event was held on April 23 to mark St George's Day.The 50-year-old used the flag as it carried the only large picture of a dragon she could find. But now Angie is devastated she is receiving hate mail and threats to burn down her pub from people living in Wales. One letter said: "Watch out you racist English ****. I hope you have got insurance on your pub because the windows are going to be put through."Camera crews from BBC Wales News and HTV Wales visited the pub and filmed Angie explaining about the prank last month.Angie said: "I've received at least five threatening letters and there's been horrible messages left on the answering machine as well."I'm only a little landlady and not out to offend or fight the Welsh."The whole incident has been blown out of proportion and I'm worried something might happen."I've had some letters of support, which have been nice, but the hate mail is really rude and I've been called a lot of offensive names."Police officers had a chat with Angie after they received a prank letter about the archery competition, but did not open a formal investigation. The pub is planning to find another dragon to fire arrows at next year and other wacky events are being held throughout the summer.A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said threats were taken seriously and would be followed up.
