POLICE are appealing for off licences to only sell alcohol to people aged over 21 and are holding surgeries at a school to tackle drugs, drink and crime.Regular police surgeries are taking place at The Kings of Wessex Community School so pupils can tell police what sort of issues they are worried about and give information they think officers should know about. The police say they know there is a problem with youngsters using class C drugs in the village and are trying to tackle the source of the problem.Officers swooped on a property in Lower North Street earlier this year and arrested four individuals for drug-related offences. They believe these arrests have partly solved the problem of drug dealing but say dealers are still coming into the village from Bristol and supplying youngsters with drugs. They say the drug problems are coupled with the effects of under-age drinking in the village.Sergeant Simon Bawler, of Cheddar police, said: "There is an under age drinking problem in Cheddar which we are trying to deal with."We are trying to get off licences together to set up an Alcohol Watch where they will only sell alcohol to people aged over 21."We want this adopted right across the board. It's because teenagers over 18 are buying the alcohol for the kids who then go and drink it with them in the park."Unfortunately youngsters get a buzz from getting drunk and it would be hard to stop even if there was loads of activities for them in the village.
