HOUSEHOLDERS in North Somerset are having to drive to Weston tip to dump their rubbish, causing long queues to build up.The closure of Portishead Civic Amenity Site until August because of safety concerns has caused chaos at Weston's refuse centre. The site at Backwell is closed on Sundays, meaning people can only go to Weston to get rid of their waste.Workers at the tip have been stopping motorists and asking where in North Somerset they live in an attempt to cut the queues. Councillor Deborah Yamanaka, North Somerset Council's Executive member for environment and community, is urging people to store their garden waste in their homes for the council's recycling collection service rather than go to the tip.She said: "With Portishead out of action and Backwell closed on a Sunday, it's become rather difficult to get rid of waste."It would help if people could hold onto their garden waste and put it out for the appropriate collection."I haven't heard of anyone from North Somerset being turned away as they're entitled to go to Weston."The move comes after North Somerset Council restricted the number of green waste bags sold to two per household because of low stocks this week. The council had 100,000 bags produced and delivered 30,000 to homes.A further 30,000 bags were available through the council, selected shops and garden centres.Around 15,000 residents living in the town centres of Weston, Nailsea, Portishead and Clevedon do not have their garden waste collected. The council says many homes do not have gardens and their crews find it difficult to reach them.
