WHEN it comes to being an 'egghead', there are few who can compete with Daphne Fowler.Weston's quiz queen is currently appearing on TV screens across Britain as part of a team of quiz champions who take on challengers from all walks of life. The 67-year-old was hand picked to take part in the BBC2 show, Eggheads, which is hosted by newsreader Dermot Murnaghan, because of her track record on TV quizzes. Now in her fifth series, she is a familiar face to thousands across the country."My specialist subjects are history and politics," said Daphne."But my worst is food and drink, it's just an area that doesn't interest me."Daphne makes sure she reads the paper each day to ensure her general knowledge stays in tip top condition. The Daily Express is her paper of choice."I enjoy the sports quiz in the paper. In the first few series I used to get picked on to compete in the sports section, but that doesn't happen now."Daphne's quiz career has put her on TV screens on the other side of the world. She competed in Sale of the Century in Australia for three years and won enough money to buy her council house in Coniston Crescent on the Bournville estate."I've lived here all my married life and I wouldn't move. I have lovely neighbours," she said."People think I must earn lots of money on Eggheads, but the programme is on the BBC and we just get a little bit when we win."Daphne also won a Mini in 1983 in the British version of Sale of the Century hosted by Nicholas Parsons. But she says the highlight of her quiz career was being Des O'Connor's phone-a-friend when he appeared on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Thankfully she rose to the challenge when she got the call from Chris Tarrant and put Des' total up from £8,000 to £16,000.Her other accolades have included winning two grand finals of 15-1 and winning Brain of Britain on Radio 4 in 1997.Daphne, who retired from being a secretary at NatWest in Weston 10 years ago, is in good company in her 'egghead' team. Judith Keppel, Who Wants to be a Millionaire's first jackpot winner, and world quiz champion Kevin Ashman are among her team mates.Later in the current series they take on a team captained by Jade Goody, the former Big Brother contestant who famously thought horseradish comes from horses and East Anglia is abroad.Daphne would not let on how Jade and her team got on, but said: "She's not as silly as she makes out."Eggheads is currently screened on BBC2 each weekday at 6pm.
