Races in gorge prompt speed limit calls

BOY racers once again descended on Cheddar Gorge at the weekend, leading people to call for a lower speed limit.
Motorists have met in the gorge throughout this summer and while some are simply gathering to talk about their cars, others are racing on the winding road, which has a speed limit of 60mph.
Police issued four ‘direction to leave’ notices on Sunday for antisocial driving and speeding.
Chief Inspector Paul Mogg said: “We are working with the council and highways. Some of the local residents asked for a reduction in the speed limit.
“This is not a police matter, but we will enforce whatever limit they choose to impose.
“We are in discussions with Longleat, who own some of the car parks, about installing traffic calming measures in the car parks which will stop some of the antisocial driving.”
