THERE were 39 racist attacks in North Somerset in one year alone according to statistics from a racial equality charity.

From 2011-2012, there were 23 attacks in Weston and the surrounding area and 16 in North Somerset.

These attacks could range from verbal abuse or spitting to arson, assault or burglary.

Bristol-based charity SARI – Stand Against Racism and Inequality – collated the data, which suggests a 50 per cent increase in cases since the previous year.

In its annual report, the group said:
“As with the other areas where we work there have been significant changes in the demographics for North Somerset.

“Communities traditionally living in Bristol have migrated out to North Somerset creating a much more diverse place to live and work.

“While we continue to struggle with funding from North Somerset Council, victims of race hate crime in North Somerset receive a full casework service.”

SARI claims it has not been able to participate fully in the council’s prevention plans or case review panels due to these funding cuts.
