What caused a large bang over Weston-super-Mare in the early hours of this morning (Monday)? It remains a bit of a mystery, as the RAF has ruled out one of its aircraft causing a sonic boom.
People all over Weston, Worle, Kewstoke and Banwell reported hearing a huge bang at 1.20am this morning, which rattled some windows. Some said they also saw a flash of light and thought it might be lightning.
Other people speculated it may have been caused by a sonic boom, which occurs when an object travels faster than the speed of sound.
An RAF spokesman told the Mercury: “There were no UK military aviation assets in that region at the time of the reported boom.”

The spokesman said there was no way to find out if a civilian or military aircraft from another country could have caused the noise – or if it was generated by an aircraft at all.
Worldwide storm maps do not show any lightning flashes in the United Kingdom in the past 24 hours, throwing more doubt over what may have caused the noise.
Mercury readers said it was an ‘amazing noise which was similar to an explosion’.
