A group of volunteers from Weston-super-Mare took to the streets at the weekend to give public support to refugees.

The Weston branch of Amnesty International, a human rights organisation, walked the length of the High Street and to the Town Hall with their ‘refugees welcome’ banner on Saturday.

Group chairman Denis Newbury said: “It is Refugee Week and we wanted to recognise it, given society’s attitude towards refugees at this period in time.

“It coincided with the EU referendum quite well, as a lot of people are talking about immigration at the moment and it gave us the chance to talk to people to distinguish between economic migrants and refugees.”
