A SHOCKING 57 per cent of criminals convicted of burglary in Weston have dropped out of rehabs, according to police figures.Research shows that over half of the burglaries committed in the town are by drug addicts from outside the area who have dropped out of Weston's drug treatment programmes. The news comes at the same time as a massive police clampdown on drug use and dealing in the town centre hotspots.Inspector Yan Georgiou confirmed that patrols in the town centre will be targeting users and dealers in covert and overt operations. He said: "The drug issue is a massive motivator in terms of burglary and vehicle crime because they are stealing to fund their habit."Some offenders have originally come to this town to access drug treatment. "Whether or not the treatment has failed in some respect, they've gone back to their life of crime."So what we are doing is getting more police officers out there on the ground, to the hot spots, to challenge the dealers and users and enforce legislation and reduce drug crime."There's been open dealing of drugs, especially in the town centre and we need to take stock of it and do something about it. It has become more visible over the last few weeks, and it's the visibility that's worrying. "To do it in the open in front of shoppers is not going to be tolerated. "We've decided to step up patrols in all the areas we cover around the town centre and clamp down on drug use and drug dealing.
