Weston’s coastguard and RNLI crews were called, mid-way through yesterday’s (Sunday’s) remembrance service, to rescue a kite-surfer who was in trouble.

The RNLI crew paraded through the town but were paged to attend the emergency incident at 11.06am.

A member of the public had seen the kite-surfer in difficulty of Uphill Beach.

Crews left Grove Park immediately but by the time they reached the seen the kite-surfer had sorted themselves out.

Mike Buckland, the lifeboat operations manager at Weston station, said: “We feel it is important to attend the annual service to give thanks to those who lost their lives for our freedom.

“However, our main aim is saving lives at sea so even during such a solemn ceremony we did our duty and launched the lifeboat.

“Even though the kite surfer saved himself we would always want to go and check that all is well.”
