A HIGHBRIDGE councillor says changes due to take place at a day centre could spell disaster for people with learning disabilities.Somerset County Council has announced day services for adults with learning difficulties at the Pepperall Resource Centre in Highbridge will be replaced with accommodation for 12 to 15 adults with learning disabilities over the next 18 months. But Councillor Jean Whitehouse says many people use the centre at the moment. She said: "Nothing surprises me about these changes. Nothing amazes me these days. A lot of people use the centre and they get so much out of it."The county council says the number of adults with learning difficulties using the centre has decreased in the last five to 10 years because an increasing number of people are using the Work Preparation Service in West Huntspill. The new accommodation at the Pepperall Resource Centre site is expected to be ready by 2008. The council says a day centre will be built in Bridgwater which will be available to people from Burnham and Highbridge.
