A PORTISHEAD vicar is celebrating becoming the first Reverend in England to qualify as a badminton coach.

Rev Des Williamson, a minister at St Nicholas and St Peter's Churches in Portishead, qualified as a level two badminton coach last weekend.

He said: "Badminton England, the governing body for the sport, said it has no record of any other reverends on the coaching register, so I am likely to be the first in the country."

Des coaches the Junior Badminton Club at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre where youngsters aged from 11 to 16 play on Monday evenings.

He is also planning to coach individuals of any age up to adult intermediate level now he has his qualification.
