YOU could almost smell the petrol as the South West tractor pulling championships came to Brean last weekend.

Tractors and trucks from across the region were on display at Brean Leisure Park for the event, which was last hosted in the village in 1987.

Willing challengers attempted to pull a heavy sledge as far as possible along the tractor course, with tractors complete with V12 engines exciting the swelling crowd at the park.

South West Tractor Pullers’ Association chairman Steve Cox said: “We had a marvellous weekend in Brean, we have always wanted to try and get back there. There was a great turnout of spectators and the pullers thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“Since we were last in Brean the sport didn’t die a death as such, but it’s picked up now and we’re delighted to be back, and hopefully we can come back bigger and better next year.”
